RYTMO opened their arms and took me in as one of their own. This program has changed my life, and has also changed the lives of those like me who have also attended. I am truly grateful to have found Project RYTMO, and am honored and blessed to represent all of RYTMO this summer at the five week summer performance program at Berklee College of Music." www.myspace.com/mychaljamesfabela The lovely, 17-year old Jasmine Johnson - RYTMO veteran and volunteer - just recently got accepted into the prestigious Chapman University for Creative Writing in Fall! MUSIC EDUCATORS USE SHURE MICROPHONES TO TRAIN YOUNG PERFORMERS: Program Provides Positive, Creative and Professional Environment For Talented, Underserved Youth ANAHEIM, CA, April 15, 2010 – Shure Incorporated is proud to play a role in the non-profit Project RYTMO (Reaching Youth Through Music Opportunities), now in its seventh year in Anaheim, California. The free after-school program, funded in part by the state and federal governments, provides a creative, positive and professional environment for underserved youth who demonstrate musical, technical and/or business potential in the arts. Project RYTMO’s mission is to educate, empower and equip young people between the ages of 14 and 24 through music, music technology and artistic development. Since 2003, the program has served more than 350 at-risk youth, many of whom have been homeless or have had experience with the juvenile justice system. To show its support for music education, Shure donated SLX 2 wireless and SM 58 hard-wired microphones to the program. “As a company, we pride ourselves on giving back to the community,” says Shure President and CEO Sandy LaMantia. “These kids show immense promise and we couldn’t be more pleased to lend our support to this program, which is helping them fulfill their artistic and professional potential.” “The microphones are vital to the success of our program,” says Project RYTMO founder and executive director Joey Arreguin. “Sponsors like Shure are critical, since they supply our kids with much needed professional products. As our program grows, so does the demand for gear. These are kids are hungry to learn how to integrate professional products like Shure mics into recording, live shows, film and television. We can’t thank Shure enough.” Project RYTMO offers 9-week sessions, with classes including music history, commercial songwriting, digital recording and live audio/engineering. During the sessions, students are also taught life-enriching skills such as goal setting, project planning, leadership and professionalism. Giving back is also a critical part of the program, as each student must commit to performing two hours of community service at the conclusion of each 9-week session. Most importantly, says Arreguin, Project RYTMO keeps young people in low-income areas off the streets. The supportive environment helps them overcome barriers and create something positive in their lives. “Music is the tool we use to engage them in those critical hours during the day when they wouldn’t otherwise have something to do,” Arreguin explains. “We’re giving them a positive, creative outlet.” Project RYTMO also helps prepare young people for the career world, by focusing on occupational skills training. “We’re engaging kids in computers and technology,” Arreguin points out. “Whether or not they choose music for a career, we’re giving them fundamental computer skills they can take to any job in the future. That’s important.” Many Project RYTMO graduates have gone on to start their own record labels, video and audio companies, perform live shows or produce music for themselves or other artists. Arreguin is now looking to expand Project RYTMO into other parts of California and has just entered into a partnership with the Berklee School of Music in Boston that will allow eligible young people to participate in online learning and even apply for music scholarships.
