What is a Music Mentor?
Our mission is to provide one-on-one artistic development and life enrichment through positive role modeling, professional encouragement, and personal accountability.
According to Princeton University's Dictionary, a mentor is a wise and trusted guide and advisor. More than that, we believe that it is a caring adult who is willing to invest into the life of a young man or woman by spending time, listening, and building an authentic relationship with him/ her.
Of course, this will allow for wisdom to be shared, and a trusting friendship will be the obvious outcome. Then guidance and advice flows naturally, and the lives of young people are touched, changed and repaired.
Mentors are not miracle workers or magicians, just real people investing their time and their hearts to see a change in their community. We believe this to be a high calling - and an awesome opportunity!
The uniqueness of Project RYTMO is that we have music as a common ground. Many of our mentors are accomplished musicians from several different musical genre's. Some are artists in other fields that are not music related, such as dancers or painters. Some have had experience in the music industry as engineers or managers. Some have had no experience at all in these areas - but are willing to learn.
What's most important in our mentors is that they realize their place as guides and advisors. It's important that they are committed to the cause. It's important that they work with youth as individuals and help them set goals in their lives. It's important that they work alongside youth, their parents and the RYTMO team to see those goals become a reality. And it's important that each mentor know that we'll be there to support them with training, ideas, curriculum, and a listening ear.
If you are interested in becoming a RYTMO Mentor, please contact us right away. We need you to help us make a difference.
Our mentor program requires that you contribute a minimum of 30 minutes bi-weekly or 1 hour monthly for a period of 12 months. You will be responsible for:
- Scheduling and attending your mentor/mentee meeting regularly. (Occasional phone calls and email appointments are considered valid mentoring meetings, from time to time)
- Setting goals, objectives, deadlines and provide accountability with your mentee on a weekly basis.
- Assessing artistic/professional goals, make recommendations, and provide contacts, professional advice and resources for your mentee.
- Attending Mentor meetings throughout the year with other mentors for training and development purposes
- Maintain strict confidentiality with your mentee, and his/her case manager regarding personal matters and concerns.
